Why do Americans even bother with the Presidential election?

The Founding Fathers greatest fear regarding the ultimate fate of the nation they created was that, eventually, poorly educated and ill-informed voters would elect politicians even more selfish and greedy than themselves. That likely makes George Bush their worst nightmare.
