Christians don't worship the cross. They worship what the cross represents (Jesus)?

I asked a lady one day why she had a cross around her neck. She said to remind her of Jesus' death. I then asked her if she would put a gun on a necklace to remind her of her granddaughter that was killed by a gun. She said NO. I then asked her why she needed a reminder that Jesus died for us, that is why he came to earth in the first place. She started asking many questions after that.
